Change is inevitable, yet how one responds to changes is essential. The world is continuously changing, and professionals must be—adaptive. Professional development has expanded beyond staff meetings, workshops, leadership conferences, and weekend “team-building” retreats. It is not to say that these types of development are not effective; there is just more needed to ensure change implementation. All of us benefit from personal development. In the words of the famous football coach John Wooden, “It is what you learn after you know it all that counts.”

Today’s blog investigates what a person can do to self-develop their confidence in the workplace. These steps are simple and easy to start applying TODAY!

  1. CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK- Do you let the words of others affect you? Do you mind what they think of you? Remember that no one can make you feel inferior without your consent. It is not what they say to you that is the problem; it is what you say to yourself after they have stopped talking that is the problem. Change the way you think!
  2. DEATH AND LIFE ARE IN THE POWER OF TONGUE– List the words you use consistently when you feel let down or annoyed. People use different words to mean the same thing and depending upon the intensity of the word – this will influence your confidence. Instead of saying, “I am enraged about this,” say, “I am a little annoyed.” Make a substitute list for the words that you use. Change the way you speak!
  3. ENCOURAGE YOURSELF– At the end of each day, list your achievements and accomplishments throughout that day then celebrate what you have done. It is okay to celebrate small and large accomplishments. Change the way you achieve!
  4. IMPROVE YOUR BODY LANGUAGE– How you move your body has a massive impact on your confidence levels. Move your body assertively and walk with your head up, shoulders back, and as though you have gotten somewhere significant to go. Change the way you move!
  5. SPEAK CONFIDENCE- Learn to brag about yourself. Talk about your achievements and successes more than you currently are because this gives a voice to your confidence. This is not vanity or arrogance! Change the way you believe!
